“Below” is the marine life that lies beneath, some critically endangered or never seen by most. They have been here for millions of years long before humans started destroying this world. These are experiences, what it truly feels like below the surface, the divide between worlds.
The ocean is not blue; it’s green, black, and hazy, full of shadows and darkness. Light is sparse; visibility is limited, sometimes moving more by feeling than seeing. We are only guests here, those who live beneath feel, touch, smell, and have sensors we could never understand and still have much to learn from. I want you to feel what it’s like below, without ever being in the ocean, the crackle of the coral while Green Sea Turtles sleep above it, the pops and hums of the fish feeding as Australian Sea Lions play and mimic your every move. To truly understand that your actions, no matter how small, will impact the blue heart of this planet.
Everything you see here is shot on a single breath, no air, no tanks, only a 30 to 90-second window before the burn in my lungs pulls me back to the surface. No automatic flash or lighting, just a handheld dive torch to minimise impact and disturbance. Moving unrestricted through the free-flowing currents of our cold southern Australian oceans, this is home. Shot over two years, 100+ moments, each telling a story of not only a struggle for survival but the need to co-existence. This is a plea to you from those without a voice. Your actions determine their future.
