Matt Bagley.
An ongoing study of light, stillness, and hidden worlds beneath the surface.

I grew up by the ocean. It shaped how I see everything. Now I work underwater, on a single breath, in the cold southern water off Victoria's coast. No strobe — only the light that's already there. I'm not chasing a shot. I just wait for the ocean to offer a moment worth noticing.
Matthew Bagley grew up in a small coastal fishing town on Victoria's southern coast. The ocean was close, and the life it held was visible from a young age — not as spectacle, but as part of the place.
He has spent years working as a creative in the corporate world and years in the water. The photographs come from the second life.
Bagley works on single breath, in cold southern Australian waters, with a Leica camera in an Aquatech housing. He uses no strobe — only the available light of the environment. The images are made in near-darkness, in cold water, through patience and repeated return. The process is unhurried. The encounter is on the subject's terms.
His work spans two major collections. "Below" (2021) documents the rugged coastline of Australia's southern ocean. The photographs are made in portrait orientation — a deliberate choice to suggest proximity, to place the viewer in relationship with the marine life rather than apart from it. The images are quiet, minimal, and grounded in a specific geography: South Gippsland, Phillip Island, Bass Strait.
"Unseen" (2021–2024) uses low-level UV light to reveal what the human eye cannot ordinarily see: ocean debris reclaimed by marine ecosystems, fluorescing in red, orange, purple, and blue. The project is a long-term investigation into the non-visible consequences of human activity — what the ocean holds that we have left behind and forgotten.
His photographs have been exhibited in New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Moscow, Monaco, Budapest, and Barcelona, and published in Australian Geographic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Vanity Fair. His work has been recognised in the Australian Wildlife / Nature Photographer of the Year, IPA, MIFA, Ocean Photographer of the Year, ND Awards, and PA2F environmental photography award.
Bagley is based near Phillip Island and South Gippsland, Victoria.
The work is made entirely in available light. No strobe. No artificial flash. What you see in these images is what already existed at that depth, in that water, at that moment. This is a condition of the work — not a limitation of it.
