Redefining Immersive Visual Storytelling with Palx
A still image is two-dimensional. Width and height. No depth.
Palx adds a Z-axis — the illusion of movement through space within a single moment. It's a technique borrowed from UI design and animation, where parallax scrolling has long been used to create a sense of depth in flat interfaces. Applied to photography, it does something different: it introduces dimension into a frame that was never meant to move.
The result isn't video. It isn't a photograph. It's something between — a burst of frames that suggests the weight and volume of the scene, the water pressing inward, the subject occupying actual space rather than surface.
Immersion is what I'm always working toward underwater. The challenge is translating that into the image — making the viewer feel the depth of the environment rather than observe it from outside. Palx is one answer to that question.
I'm still developing it. At some point I'd like to build an API that can generate this from any image. For now, this is a first version I'm comfortable sharing.
